Time is the Great Depression.1930’s.Unmarried teen-ager chooses life for her unborn son despite many difficulties. .Cross-eyed and pudgy, he is teased a lot (hence book’s title) .Mother must give him up, elderly grandparents are only choice. They proceed to raise him through trials and errors, some serious, some humorous. Conservative farm folks from the Ozarks, they apply old fashioned rules of character which shape his life, while others in the little Ozark town keep him on the proper path. At the end of the story he is on his way to college, first person in his family to do so and is reunited with his mother in the night of her death.

A native of Neosho, Missouri, Gene Allen is a graduate of Oklahoma State University. While still in school, he began a career in Broadcasting, writing copy and commercials for several small market radio stations in Oklahoma. With the advent of television, he joined the early staff of WKY-TV, first as a writer and then branching out to shooting news film and finally as a member of WKY-TV’S documentary team. During its ten y-ear existence the team won a number of state and national awards including one Emmy nomination. His previous publications include “Voices on The Wind” a history of early radio broadcasting in Oklahoma, and “The Quaker Sergeant’s War”, the diary of a Civil War Quaker soldier.
