The journal Industrial Biotechnology has for some years been spreading the word about cooperation between academic researchers and industrial biotechnologists. This cooperation has been fostered by the setting up of Biotechnology Centres to promote the exchange of ideas and enterprise. This volume consists of major articles from Industrial Biotechnology which reflect both the educational nature of much of the journal’s output and the very wide range of its subject matter. The articles cover some of the basic biological processes that are the resources of biotechnology and consider major applications in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, food processing, biosensors and other areas. The future of biotechnology and its progress in other countries is also considered.
