Hall Cain (1853-1931) was one of the highest-paid authors of the late-Victorian early-Edwardian Age. So successful was he that his books sold tens of millions of copies, were translated into many languages, and were adapted as plays and movies. Among his most famous works are The Manxman, The Scapegoat, and The Christian. He also wrote Recollections of Rosetti, about his companion.
