Where is your treasure?
The scriptural teaching about money is clear, radical, and uncompromising — and at odds with the practice of most people. This presents an uncomfortable question: do we change our lives in accordance with Scripture or do we change Scripture to fit our lives? Virgil Vogt argues that we undermine Scripture’s authority when we disregard its teaching about wealth or when we conclude that such teaching cannot be applied in a complex, modern economy. The Bible, Vogt says, is still the best guide to economic life.
Scripture teaches a consistent word about our possessions: we are to use the things we have to gain eternal riches. This teaching, coupled with the principle of stewardship, should govern our economic lives. But it takes courage along with genuine faith and a single-minded determination to live according to the Bible’s standard in this area. ‘Treasure in Heaven’ offers a challenge for all Christians who want to bring their finances into line with God’s Word.

Virgil Vogt was a leader for many years of Reba Place Church and Reba Place Fellowship, a Christian community in Evanston, Illinois. He continues as a member of this community but currently serves as Associate Conference Minister for the Illinois Mennonite Conference.
