The pseudonym is very personal to her—Nina was her childhood nickname (derived from her middle name, Penina, which was also her grandmother’s name) and Waters is a translation of her mother’s maiden name. Originally, Nina decided to use a pen name when she was working on an angst-ridden musical about unrequited love as a way of nursing a broken heart. The broken heart faded with time, but the pen name stayed!
