Osteoclasts are highly specialized cells, derived from the hematopoietic lineage, that resorb mineralized bone matrix. Osteoclast precursors can be recruited to the bone remodeling sites by specific cytokines in the microcellular environment, including some secreted by osteoblasts, fibroblasts, and osteocytes.
