Democracy in America is a classic work of political and social analysis written by
Alexis de Tocqueville , a French political thinker and historian. The book was published in two volumes, the first in 1835 and the second in 1840, following Tocqueville’s extensive travels and observations of the young United States.
Tocqueville’s primary goal in writing ‘Democracy in America’ was to understand the functioning of American society and the success of democracy in the United States. He wanted to explore the strengths and weaknesses of democracy and its impact on individual liberties, social equality, and political institutions. The work is considered a landmark in the study of democracy and remains widely read and influential.
Alexis Charles Henri Clérel, comte de Tocqueville (29 July 1805 – 16 April 1859), usually known as just
Tocqueville , was a French aristocrat, diplomat, political scientist, political philosopher and historian. He is best known for his works
Democracy in America (appearing in two volumes, 1835 and 1840) and
The Old Regime and the Revolution (1856). In both, he analyzed the living standards and social conditions of individuals as well as their relationship to the market and state in Western societies. Democracy in America was published after Tocqueville’s travels in the United States and is today considered an early work of sociology and political science.
