After the death of his father, Nicholas Nickleby, with the help of his rich uncle Ralph Nickleby, gets into a boarding school Dotheboys Hall Academy in Yorkshire.
Here Nicholas discovers that the school reminds more of a prison: children starve and go through cruel punishments. Nicholas gets to know a strange boy by the name of Smike whose secret of birth is one of the main topics of the novel. Smike and our hero leave the school.
