The Victorian age was a time of geological discovery. Kingsley published this introduction to the science for children in 1869. Through conversations about earthquakes, volcanoes, coral reefs, and other features, he encourages children to observe the world around them and learn how the wonders of the earth evolved.

Charles Kingsley (1819–1875) was an English clergyman, university professor, historian, and novelist—most closely associated with the West Country and Hampshire. Among his novels, the best known are Hypatia, Westward Ho!, and Hereward the Wake. He is also the author of the children’s classic The Water-Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby, a story about a boy chimney sweep.
