E. Somerville and Martin Ross were, in fact, born Edith Anna Oenone Somerville and Violet Florence Martin, and are second cousins. After meeting in 1886, the Irish cousins together moved into a house in County Cork, and became writing partners. They collaborated on many humorous books together. Their critical success The Real Charlotte (1894) is, naturally, about two cousins.
