Like in other historical fiction books by G.A. Henty, the hero is a boy, who gets involved in the Crimean War, 1853-1856. A conflict between the Russian Empire and an alliance of the French Empire, the British Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Kingdom of Sardinia. The Crimean War is known for logistical and tactical errors during the land campaign on both sides. The book describes these errors very accurately.
