عن المؤلف

Henry Fielding (1707–1754) was an English novelist and dramatist known for his rich earthy humor and satirical prowess, and as the author of the novel ‘The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling’ (1749). Born into the aristocracy in Somerset, Fielding was educated at Eton College and subsequently studied law at the University of Leiden. Before turning to novel-writing, Fielding wrote satirical plays, which both delighted and outraged his audiences. His career in the theater came to an abrupt end due to the Licensing Act of 1737, which was partly instigated by Fielding’s sharp critiques of the government. Lured by the promise of a wider audience and less censorship, Fielding made a successful transition from playwright to novelist. He is often cited as a founder of the English novel, with ‘Tom Jones’ considered his masterpiece, representing the emergence of the complex, multi-threaded narrative. This picaresque novel is praised for its vivid characters, robust humor, and panoramic survey of English society. Fielding’s narrative voice, rich in irony and moral contemplation, sets him apart as a critical observer of human nature and social dynamics. His literary style combines realism with a compassionate representation of human failings. Fielding’s contribution to literature goes beyond his novels; he also penned ‘Joseph Andrews’ and ‘Amelia’, and as a magistrate, he showed a sustained interest in social justice, which influenced his writing. His works inspired later writers, notably Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, birthing a legacy that cemented him as a luminary of the 18th-century English novel.
