Henry Morley (1822-1894) was one of the first professors of English literature. Born in London, he practiced medicine before turning to literature, contributing to Charles Dickens’s Household Words and All the Year Around. His works include the influential ten-volume English Writers (1864-1894) and biographies of Bernard Palissy, Cornelius Agrippa, Girolamo Cardano, and Clement Marot.
