The Fiction of George Gissing

George Gissing’s books, published during the last two decades of the nineteenth century, are memorable for their portraits of women. After doctoral work at UCLA, James Haydock earned a Ph.D. in Victorian literature from the University of North Carolina. Afterwards he taught college classes for thirty years and made his contribution to society. In retirement he published sixteen full-length books of fiction and non-fiction. A nonagenarian, he lives with his wife in Wisconsin.
