The human face is a dynamic canvas upon which humans voluntarily and involuntarily display their most intimate feelings. Observers scrutinize the faces of others to make inferences about their emotions, intentions and thoughts. In this book, the authors explore the dynamic patterns, impairments and social perceptions of facial expressions. Topics include linking infant facial expressions of emotion to respective parental attention; facial expression during interpersonal interactions that are pro-social and criminally deviant; situational and perceiver characteristics that influence the processing and decoding of facial expressions of emotion; facial expression and eye gaze direction; image based facial expression synthesis; and the analysis and recognition of facial expressions in videos using facial shape deformation.
