This book from the Wink Classics Series comes with Critical Notes in the form of a biography, chronology of the author and a detailed Introduction that suggests ways of reading the text by Anna Kurian; all adding value to a timeless classic. Hamlet, Shakespeare’s best known play and literary character tells a story of murder and treachery. Hamlet, prince of Denmark, returns from University for his father’s funeral, only to find his mother married to his uncle who has been crowned king. His squeamish unease at the haste with which this has been affected turns to thoughts of revenge after he is told by his father’s ghost that he was actually murdered by Claudius, Hamlet’s brother. The ghost implores him to avenge this act. Hamlet, in love with Ophelia, daughter of Polonius, Lord Chamberlain to Claudius, pretends to be mad to discover whether the ghost did speak the truth. In his search for the truth Ophelia is driven mad, her father killed, his old friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, sent to their deaths and his uncle realises that Hamlet is a real danger to him. In the final scene Claudius plots to murder Hamlet by using Laertes but things go woefully wrong and the stage is littered with corpses.
