Art Young (1866–1943) was an American cartoonist and writer, recognized for his characteristic blend of satire and compassion, directed towards social and political injustices. Born in Orangeville, Illinois, Young cultivated his artistic talents from an early age, leading to a career that spanned many decades and encompassed work for numerous publications. He rose to prominence through his association with socialist and progressive magazines such as “The Masses”, where his illustrations effectively captured the spirit of the early 20th-century labor movements and societal challenges. His literary style is marked by a keen sense of humor and a sharp wit, elements that are vividly present in his seminal work “Through Hell with Hiprah Hunt” (1901), a satirical critique of religious dogmatism and the fallacies of theocratic belief. The narrative follows the title character on a journey through the afterlife, echoing the traditions of Dante”s “Inferno” yet infused with Young”s unique socio-political commentary. The book, aside from exhibiting Young”s artistic prowess, also encapsulated his lifelong commitment to advocating for the underprivileged and critiquing institutional corruption.
