Augustine Birrell (1850–1933) was an English politician, barrister, academic, and man of letters. For ten years, he served as the Chief Secretary for Ireland, resigning in the wake of the Easter Rising. He is the author of many books, including Obiter Dicta—his first collection of essays—and Life of Charlotte Brönte.
