Brian Lavery was born and educated in Scotland. He worked as a teacher, then in the printing industry before turning to marine consultancy and curatorship. In 1991, he became Curator of Ship Technology at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. He has published many books, including Ship of the Line (2 vols, 1983-4) and Nelson's Navy (1989).
