About the author

Charles Isaac Elton (1839–1900) was an English lawyer, politician, and antiquary. After graduating from Balliol College, Oxford, he wrote a number of books on history and legal issues such as The Tenures of Kent (1867), Origins of English History (1882), and William Shakespeare: His family and Friends (1903). His poem “Luriana Lurilee, ” was repeatedly quoted in Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse.
 
Mary Augusta Elton (1838–1914) assisted her husband in writing The Great Book Collectors, and was an avid book collector herself.
