About the author

Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855) was an English novelist and poet, who is best known for her seminal work ‘Jane Eyre, ‘ an influential text in English literature. Born in Thornton, West Yorkshire, Charlotte was the eldest of the three Brontë sisters who survived into adulthood and whose novels have become classics of English literature. She first published her works, including ‘Jane Eyre, ‘ under the pen name Currer Bell, to mask her gender because of the contemporary prejudices against female authors. This novel, with strong themes of morality, social criticism, and strong, complex characters, is a prime example of the blend of Gothic and Romantic sensibilities characteristic of her literary style. Other notable works by Charlotte include ‘Shirley’ and ‘Villette, ‘ which also address themes like women’s independence, personal integrity, and the juxtaposition of passion and restraint. Together with her sisters, Emily and Anne, she contributed to the volume titled ‘The Brontës: Complete Novels of Charlotte, Emily & Anne Brontë – All 8 Books in One Edition, ‘ which showcases the distinct yet harmonious literary voices of the Brontë family. Her works have inspired numerous adaptations and continue to be studied for their innovative narrative styles and exploration of contemporary social issues, particularly those related to gender and class.
