This 1896 autobiography is by and about a spiritualist, suffragette, antivivisectionist—a woman who married a journalist seventeen years younger and was known for controversial fiction that shattered stereotypes, challenged social convention, and explored the interior lives of women. She tells her story, from her upbringing in Andover, Massachusetts to her literary success and her friendship with Harriet Beecher Stowe.
Über den Autor
Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward (1844-1911), born Mary Gray Phelps, was an American novelist who in 1874 urged women to burn their corsets. In addition to women’s rights, she was active in temperance, antivivisection, and other causes. Her novels about the afterlife consoled many survivors of Civil War dead.
