Franz Boas (1858–1942) was a German-born anthropologist. Among the first to distinguish the basic elements of modern anthropology, Boas focused particularly on the linguistic and cultural components of ethnology. He pursued breakthrough fieldwork on Baffin Island, studying the Inuit.
