Fleeing conscription into Napoleon’s army Kuhlau landed in Copenhagen with a stack of manuscripts under his arm. Riding on the popularity of his piano concerto this sonata was one of the first of his works to be published but it already shows a glimmering of the Romantic genius in his stride. Based on a version of the ‚Ave Maria‘, it is the only religiously inspired work of his entire career and in it Kuhlau exhibits the creative flair which would earn him the reputation of one of the most progressive of composers.
