Henry Demarest Lloyd (1847-1903) was born in New York City, and helped to bring down the Boss Tweed political machine. He also exposed the business practices of Standard Oil in “The Story of a Great Monopoly, ” published in The Atlantic, and in the book-length version, Wealth Against Commonwealth (1894).
