Herbert Giersch (1921-2010) lehrte als Professor für Volkswirtschaftslehre zunächst an der Universität des Saarlandes und anschließend an der Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel. Dort amtierte er zudem als Präsident des Instituts für Weltwirtschaft. Giersch war Gründungsmitglied des Sachverständigenrats zur Begutachtung der gesamtwirtschaftlichen Entwicklung sowie fast fünf Jahrzehnte Mitglied im wissenschaftlichen Beirat des Bundesministeriums für Wirtschaft.
