Hiking Home is much more than a book about exercising in woods and fields. While taking the reader on a hike through the scenic German countryside, the author weaves fascinating facts about German history as well as cherished memories into the fabric of her journey.
Some of the adventures of the hiking Görgen sisters made me laugh out loud. Others made me wince and marvel about how much my friend was willing to endure to achieve her goal. Once I started reading Hiking Home, I could not put the book down. I did not want the journey to end. The next time Ingrid and her sister, Karin, go on a hike, I want to be included.

Ingrid Wood was born in 1950 in Neumagen, Germany. As a child, she spent many hours playing on the banks of the Mosel river as well as hiking in the beautiful Sauerland mountains and other regions of Germany.
Her life-long fascination with farming and breeding livestock traces back to wonderful childhood vacations spent with relatives on their farms. One of her grandfathers was a beekeeper. An uncle tended the family’s vineyards; a great-aunt kept dairy cows. Others raised pigs, chickens, and small flocks of sheep. All were inspiring role models for a young girl with an interest in raising livestock and living on a farm.
In 1970, Ingrid followed her American husband, David, to the United States of America. After raising their son, Benjamin, in the historical town of Mount Holly, New Jersey, the Wood family moved a few miles from their suburban home to a small farm they purchased in Springfield Township in Burlington County. The first alpacas arrived on Stormwind Farm in 1997. The farm is also home to several bee hives, and a seasonal farm store is open to the public from fall to early spring.
