Marie Karner arbeitet seit 2013 als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Geographischen Institut der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. Ihre thematischen Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Diaspora und Migration, arabische und koloniale Altstädte sowie Kreuzfahrt- und Filmtourismus. Theoretisch setzt sie sich mit Ansätzen zu Identität, Vergemeinschaftung, sozialen Netzwerken sowie Touristification und Atmosphären auseinander. Ihr derzeitiger regionaler Fokus liegt auf den Ländern Libanon, VAE, Australien, USA, Kuba und Brasilien.
