In this classic work, Veblen sets forth his theory that the economic life of modern society is rooted in the division of labor dating back to tribal times. That is, that the ruling or leisure class reserved what they considered the most important tasks—such as warring and hunting—for themselves, while dictating tasks such as farming or cooking to the lower echelons. Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929) was an American economist whose criticisms of the nation’s capitalism and businesses combined Darwinian evolutionary theory with broad sociological principles. The result, known as institutional economics, was extremely influential at the time of the Great Depression. He wrote such classic critiques of capitalism as The Theory of the Leisure Class and The Theory of Business Enterprise.
