The Knot Hare introduces himself to the reader as an undiscovered cryptid who no one can see. He invites the reader along on a journey to be discovered by the Professor, a famous cryptid hunter who is on a tour of the United States to discover cryptids. Using the Cryptid Weakly magazine, Knot Hare follows the Professor around the world in an attempt to be discovered. He regularly fails to be discovered in each location as the Professor confuses the chanting of ‚Knot Hare“ to be ‚Not here‘ when he asks where the cryptids are, failing to find any of them throughout the entire book. With each location, readers learn about the local cryptid legend, who Knot Hare befriends and takes on his journey.
Knot Hare first travels to Yellowstone National Park where he meets Bigfoot, who is enjoying the hot springs. Bigfoot doesn’t want to be discovered, but he does decide to help Knot Hare be discovered. However, the steam prevents the Professor from seeing either cryptid, forcing him to head to his next location.
Next, Knot Hare and Bigfoot travel to the Mojave Desert, specifically Joshua Tree National Park, where the Professor is looking for the Chupacabra. The Chupacabra offers his favorite snack to his fellow cryptids. The Professor fails to see them when Knot Hare, in his excitement, kicks up a dust form, prompting the three cryptids to team-up and travel to the next location.
Knot Hare, Bigfoot, and now the Chupacabra travel to Point Pleasant, West Virginia as the Professor searches for the Mothman. Instead of finding the Professor, who is (or who’s) busy scaling a tree, the three find a lodge full of music, enjoying a wonderful jug song performed by Mothgirl! The Professor loses his glasses after falling out of the tree and again misses the cryptids.
The four cryptids then follow the Professor to Atlantic City, New Jersey, running into the Jersey Devil at an amusement park. After enjoying all the rides the park has to offer, the group meets up and Knot Hare fails to be spotted because the Professor is covered in sticky cotton candy, which makes it difficult for him to see.
Disheartened, the Knot Hare is about to give up because the Professor has finished his tour of the United States looking for cryptids. However, his newfound friends try to cheer him up and then point out that there’s one last stop on the Professor’s tour, it’s just not in the United States.
So, with the power of turning a page and breaking the fourth wall once again, Knot Hare and his friends travel to Scotland. They pretend to be a crew of sailors who set sail with the Professor in his quest to find the Loch Ness Monster. More hijinks ensue and the group runs right into Nessie. The Professor fails to see any of them due to the mist and his eyesight.
Despite never being discovered, Nessie points out that Knot Hare can only be seen by other cryptids and special people, looking directly at the reader while pointing this out. While Knot Hare is upset that he’ll never be discovered, Nessie says he’s been discovered by the people who matter, and his newfound cryptid friends gather around him for a heartfelt ending.
