Published in 1917, this is the third volume of Richardson’s masterful
Pilgrimage sequence, tracing the life and interior consciousness of heroine Miriam Henderson by means of the then-revolutionary stream-of-consciousness technique (though Richardson herself preferred the term ‘interior monologue’). Miriam becomes a governess for the wealthy Corrie family while her mother’s health deteriorates.
