Bhisma or Bhisma Pitamah was one of the most important Characters of the Mahabharata. He was the eighth child of King Shantanu and Goddess Ganga and his original name was Devavrata. Bhisma took a robust pledge to follow lifelong celibacy to get his father Shantanu married to Satyavati. He is best known for taking this pledge, because of that despite the king of Hastrinapur, he participated in the war on behalf of Kauravas and played the role of guardian of the throne of Hastinapur. He didn’t mary and remained a celibate. He was blessed with "Death at Will’. He was the chief commander of the Kauravas for 10 days. When the Mahabharata war finished off then he took "death at will" at the Banks of the river Ganga.
