About the author

Elizabeth Gaskell (1810–1865) was an English writer known for her detailed portrayals of Victorian society. Her works often explore themes of social inequality and the roles of women in society. She gained literary fame with her first novel, ‘Mary Barton’ (1848), a powerful depiction of working-class struggles in the industrial north. She also wrote several ghost stories and gothic tales.
