Richard Austin Freeman (1862–1943) drew upon his experiences as a colonial surgeon in Africa in the creation of his character Dr. John E. Thorndyke. His first Thorndyke story appeared in 1907, and after serving as an army physician during World War I, he published a tale of the doctor/detective nearly every year for the next three decades.
