Ann Banfield, doctora por la Universidad de Wisconsin, es profesora emérita en la Universidad de Berkeley, donde enseña desde 1975. Su campo de trabajo es el de las relaciones entre la lingüística y la literatura, en especial de las literaturas inglesa y francesa, ámbito en el que ha publicado Unspeakable Sentences: Narration and Representation in the Language of Fiction (1982). Su libro La mesa fantasma. Virginia Woolf, Roger Fry, Bertrand Russell y el modernismo ha supuesto una verdadera revolución en los estudios sobre la novelista británica.
