Uncle Vanya is a play by the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. It was first published in 1898, and first produced in 1899 by the Moscow Art Theatre, directed by Konstantin Stanislavski. Along with Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard, Uncle Vanya is credited as one of Chekhov's masterpieces and a significant precursor of modern drama. Set in a rural Russian estate, the play follows a group of characters as they grapple with their feelings of dissatisfaction and unfulfilled dreams. Through the use of masterful dialogue and subtle humor, Chekhov showcases the human condition in all its complexity.
