Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The following work, although the most elaborate production of the Scottish Reformer, is one that requires no lengthened introduction. It may, however, be desirable to inquire into the origin and state of the controversy which induced Knox to devote so much time and labour in his Answer to an anony mous Adversary of God’s Truth. The early study of the writings of St Augustin, the most formidable antagonist of the Pelagian heresy, may have prepared him for defending more keenly the orthodox sentiments on this subject.
