David Starr Jordan (1851 – 1931) was one of the founders of Stanford University, ichthyologist, essayist and president of Indiana University. He was most famous for his theory of eugenics, in which he insisted that the breeding of people should be performed like the breeding of animals, where the strongest individuals should receive a priority. He expressed his ideas in a number of political essays an was a strong proponent of compulsory sterilization.
