Gordon was originally a Physics and Mathematics teacher but then spent many years running large tourism and leisure businesses, including Warwick Castle and the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu before sailing on the bicentenary voyage. The planned three-year voyage finally became a sixteen year epic journey after Gordon rebuilt the ship in Australia. Sue and Jon were unable to attend normal schools but despite this went on to gain doctorates from Cambridge and Cranfield Universities.
