Author/Prof. Jesus L. Romalde, Full Professor of Microbiology since 2010, has been involved in research on enteric viruses for more than 25 years, including different aspects such as bioacumulation, depuration and transmission of norovirus and hepatitis A virus by bivalve shellfish, prevalence in human populations, or viral genotyping, among others. In the last years, he has led investigations on emerging viruses including sapovirus, hepatitis E virus and aichivirus. Since 1987, he has participated in 40 founded R+D projects from public calls, being the principal investigator in 17 of them. In addition, he has been involved in more than 20 industry-funded projects, being the scientist in charge in 10 of them. He has co-authored 211 publications (171 research papers and 40 book chapters and monographies) and has presented 25 invited talks. He has directed 12 Ph.D. thesis and 20 Master research projects. Between 2012 and 2014, he holded the position of Vice-rector for Degrees and Teaching and Research Staff and from January 2017 is the Director of the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology of the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain). Noroviruses are responsible for approximately 90% of epidemics worldwide; in particular, non-bacterial outbreaks of gastroenteritis in humans around the world, causing approximately 200, 000 deaths annually in developing countries. In addition, after the introduction of rotavirus vaccination programs, the norovirus is the most common cause of pediatric gastroenteritis, requiring medical care in the high- and middle-income countries. All of this information is indicative of norovirus prevalence worldwide, and of the necessity of efforts to develop effective tools for their control and prevention. The prevalence of noroviruses worldwide is alarming, and this information is indicative of the necessity for effective tools to aid in their control and prevention. This book presents a compilation of recent research on these aspects, providing essential and specific information to help further understand the prevalence and distribution of norovirus genotypes and strains, the potential emergence of new strains of this pathogen, as well as strategies for their prevention and treatment.Target Audience:The target audience of this book comprises not only researchers in the areas of knowledge of virology, clinical microbiology, food microbiology or epidemiology, but also professionals and administrators related to these fields. In addition, it can be useful for teachers and students in undergraduate and graduate courses of virology, microbiology, medicine and public health.
