Nichol wrote the biography based on his own in-depth analysis of Carlyle’s work, Nichol’s personal impressions of Carlyle, as well as information from other biographies. As well as the story of Carlyle’s life, this biography contains chapters entitled, “Carlyle as a man of Letters, Critic, and Historian, ” “Carlyle’s Political Philosophy, ” and “Ethics—Predecessors—Influence.”

John Nichol (1833-1894) was a Scottish educator, critic, poet, and playwright. His dramas and poetry were outshone by his notable contributions to the English Men of Letters series and his critical biography of the poet Robert Burns (1882). His American Literature: An Historical Review, 1620-1880 (1882) was a groundbreaking work.
