He is the author of Remains of the Everyday: A Century of Recycling in Beijing (California, 2020) and Drama Kings: Players and Publics in the Re-creation of Peking Opera, 1870–1937 (California, 2007), and co-editor of Everyday Modernity in China (Washington, 2011).
