The Indian higher education, modeled by Lord Macaulay a century back, is turning irrelevant for the emerging global knowledge society. Significant shortfalls in dynamic and qualified faculty, huge gaps between the imparted and expected skill-sets and a greater disconnect with the market and social needs have plagued the system. Reforms since independence had a myopic approach and casual attitude towards management and revitalization of higher education essential for socio-economic development. We need to reengineer current models of delivery, quality, management and regulation of education for generation of globally competent human resource.
