Samuel Henry Kellogg (1839–1899) was an esteemed American Presbyterian missionary, educator, and Orientalist, whose significant contributions to biblical scholarship and cross-cultural understanding are still recognized. Graduating from Princeton Theological Seminary, Kellogg went on to devote much of his career to service in India, where his linguistic expertise and theological acumen enabled him to engage deeply with the culture and texts of the Subcontinent. Notably, Kellogg»s scholarly works include his «A Grammar of the Hindi Language, » which demonstrated his proficiency in and contributions to the study of Indian languages. However, Kellogg»s legacy in biblical exegesis is best encapsulated in his contributions to «The Expositor»s Bible» series, wherein he penned «The Book of Leviticus» (1891). In this work, Kellogg articulated a detailed and contextually rich commentary on the third book of the Torah. His treatment of Leviticus combined rigorous historical analysis with theological insights, reflecting the evangelical Protestant scholarship of his era. Well-versed in Hebrew and familiar with rabbinical exegesis, Kellogg»s literary style in his biblical commentaries was both academic and accessible, aimed at providing a comprehensive understanding of the text to both scholars and lay readers alike. Kellogg»s contribution to biblical literature remains a testament to his dedicated scholarship and cross-cultural theological engagement.
