Candide, or An Honest Man or Optimism, is Voltaire’s most famous philosophical novel. This edition is in Mr. Fu lei’s translation. This book tells a series of experiences of the protagonist. The protagonist, "the honest man" initially believed in the optimistic philosophy of his teacher, Pangros. He believed that everything is perfect in this world. He is the illegitimate son adopted by a baron. He felt in love with the baron’s daughter and was driven out of the house. From then on, he drifted around everywhere. Along the way, he encountered various tortures and disasters, and saw the indifference, frame-up and superstition among people. However, he still firmly believed in his perfect world outlook. Until he arrived in El Dorado, where gold, jasper and precious stones were everywhere, everyone lived a free and equal, happy and rich life. He finally came to realize the cruelty and indifference of the society, so he abandoned his previous philosophy and began to believe that life should be happy through labor.
