Born in Liverpool 1964 into a working class family, the youngest of three brothers. He grew up in a small town in southern England and had a typical state education, leaving school at sixteen. He worked in various industries at different jobs, but now owns a small business dealing in books. The author now lives back in Liverpool with his partner Pamela.
