The purpose of this book is to provide a sophisticated yet accessible introduction to some issues central to theory construction in communication. It was written in order to fill a gap that I believe exists between more elementary books on communication theory, such as Fisher (1978), Littlejohn (1979), and lnfante, Rancer, & Womack (1990), and technical discussions of the philosophy of science such as Suppe (1974), Harre (1985), and O’Hear (1989). In some ways it is patterned after Fisher, but attempts to go beyond it while providing a different viewpoint on the field of communication. In so doing, I have relied very heavily on the work of previous commentators, such as Suppe, Harre, and O’Hear, whose thoughts have struck me as reasonable. I have tried to stay away from the mass of details that many of these commentators have provided; for those interested, I would recommend turning to these sources. As a consequence, the book is relatively light on references, which can also be found in these sources.
