A propos de l’auteur

E. M. Delafield, born Edmée Elizabeth Monica Dashwood, née de la Pasture on June 9, 1890, was an accomplished and celebrated British author best known for her largely autobiographical work ‘The Diary of a Provincial Lady, ‘ which first appeared as a series in ‘Time and Tide’ and was later published in book form in 1930. With a keen wit and wry observant style, Delafield crafted her narrative around the domestic trials and tribulations of an upper-middle-class Englishwoman, resonating with the experiences of many in interwar Britain. Threading satire with sympathy, she captured the minutiae of everyday life with both humor and poignancy. Beyond the diary, Delafield’s prolific career spanned over thirty books, including novels, short stories, and plays. A member of the well-known Pen and Pencil Club, she drew inspiration from her upbringing as the daughter of a novelist mother, Mrs. Henry de la Pasture. Delafield’s works are characterized by a blend of sharp social commentary and the light-hearted comedy of manners, reflecting her ability to juxtapose the serious with the whimsical. Her contributions to English literature are underlined by her unique voice, which continues to delight and engage readers beyond her passing on December 2, 1943.
