Elizabeth Hay, geboren 1951 in Owen Sound, Ontario, empfand die Bibliothek schon früh als ihr zweites Zuhause. Die sonst strengen Eltern ließen sie in der Welt der Bücher frei herumstreunen und alles lesen, was sie wollte. In den Siebzigern wohnte Hay selbst in Yellowknife und arbeitete dort als Radiomoderatorin. Nach Stationen in London, Toronto, Mexico und New York City lebt sie heute mit ihrem Mann und ihren Kindern wieder in der Provinz Ontario, in Ottawa. Neben bislang sechs Romanen veröffentlichte sie auch zahlreiche Kurzgeschichten, Essays und Memoiren. Wie Zugvögel wurde mit dem Scotiabank Giller Prize ausgezeichnet.
