The Old Man and the Sea is a classic work with a simple plot and a short but very rich and profound meaning. It tells the story of an old fisherman, Santiago, who failed to catch a big fish for eighty-four days, but harvested a huge marlin on the eighty-fifth day eventually. The old fisherman, alone, "fought" with the big fish for three days, and finally defeated the big fish when he was about to be exhausted, but unfortunately, on his way back, the big fish was attacked by sharks one after another, and only a fish bone was left after returning to the port. Nevertheless, the image of the old fisherman’s optimism, resilience and bravery was never forgotten by the people. This novel was published in 1952 and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize (1953) and the Nobel Laureates in Literature (1954).
